When are Elections Held?

Political Party Primaries

In the primary, party candidates are nominated for offices, which are elected in the General Election. Political Party Primaries are generally held in May the Tuesday after the first Monday and Second Primaries (if necessary) seven or ten weeks thereafter.

Municipal Elections
Non-partisan Municipal Elections are held in November of odd-numbered years. (Monroe in October with run-off in November.)

General Elections
Are held on Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each even-numbered year.

Presidential Elections
Presidential Elections are held every four years.

U.S. Senate
U.S. Senators are elected for six-year terms. Most other offices are for a four-year term.

House & State
Members of U.S. House of Representatives, Members of the N.C. House and N.C. Senate are elected every two years.

Party Affiliation

North Carolina is a closed primary state. When you register, you will be asked to declare your party affiliation. You may register in one of the following ways:

Democratic:
May vote in Democratic primaries and all non-partisan, bond, referenda, special, and general elections.

Libertarian:
May vote in all Libertarian primaries non-partisan, bond, referenda, special, and general elections.

Republican:
May vote in Republican primaries and all non-partisan, bond, referenda, special, and general elections.

Unaffiliated:
Unaffiliated voters may choose to participate in any recognized party's partisan primary, or  request a non-partisan ballot.  However, you must choose only one party's primary.  Participating in a partisan primary will not affect your status as an unaffiliated voter.  If you request a non-partisan ballot, you will only vote for those contests that are non-partisan (i.e. judicial contests, referenda, etc.

To vote in all Local, State and National Elections, a person must be registered at least 25 DAYS PRIOR to the Election.
