Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a computer system capable of creating, storing, managing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. 

Many of the County's departments are using GIS.  The master plan for GIS in Union County is to have a system where all county departments will have access to GIS software and data. Rather than maintaining incompatible hardcopy maps, each department will be maintaining information in the GIS. Once this has been implemented the county offices will be able to store and manipulate information in a very efficient manner.

The purpose of the Union County GIS Parcel Access program is to provide data containing geographic information about Union County. In the preparation of this data, every effort has been made to offer the most current, correct, and clearly expressed information possible.   • Coming soon for 2012!!  New and improved GoMAPS web application.
  • Community Mapper has been updated with additional layers (water and sewer systems). Also, you can now buffer parcels (select parcels within a specific distance of a parcel).

  • 2008 FEMA Flood Zones: Flood Zone data for Union County is effective as of October 16, 2008.  This data is available for download on our website and for viewing on GoMaps.  For detailed information and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) please visit www.ncfloodmaps.com.        
  • Municipality Annexations; Union County Zoning Map; Street Centerline Updates. With the growth in Union County, we’re always working on these layers!
  • Metadata.  Literally meaning 'data about data,' metadata is an important part of data management.  It provides essential information about the data itself, including details about the who, what, when, where, why and how of data collection and production.  The Union County GIS Department is currently updating the metadata for all of its data so that users can have all the pertinent details about the data offered by the county.  Union County follows the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata set by the FGDC.
