Transportation in Union County

Transportation services are available to residents of Union County through limited NCDOT funded grant programs or through sponsorship of a local human service agency. Some grant-funded trips require the passenger pay a fare to share in the cost of the service. Fares range from $20 for a round-trip to Charlotte to $2 for a one-way trip within Union County. The determination of the requirement to pay a fare is determined at the time of registration and may be dependent upon the type of trip being scheduled.

Union County TransportationTransportation services are provided to the clients of contracting human service agencies such as Department of Social Services, Vocational Rehabilitation, Veteran Services, and Senior Nutrition. Eligibility requirements for these agency trips include but are not limited to: 

  • senior citizen at least 60 years of age
  • A developmentally disabled adult
  • Medicaid client
  • A veteran eligible for medical treatment at a VA Hospital or clinic
  • Physically disabled 

The meetings of the Transportation Advisory Board are open to the public and are held at the Transportation offices on the First Thursday of January, April, July, and October at 12:00 p.m.

Transportation also provides efficient management, maintenance and repair for the County-owned fleet of approximately 415 vehicles.

Union County Transportation Title 6 Policy

It is the policy of Union County Transportation that no person shall on the grounds of race, color, sex, age, income status, national origin, or disabilities be excluded from participation in or be subjected to discrimination under any program or service for which UCT receives Federal financial assistance.

Any person who believes they have been mistreated by an unlawful discriminatory practice under Title VI has a right to file a complaint in writing with Union County Transportation at 610 Patton Avenue, Monroe, NC 28110 within 180 days following the date of the alleged discrimination occurrence. Complaint forms may be obtained from the UCT office by calling 704-292-2598.

Appointment & Transport Policy
  • Request 48-hour notice. However, post 48-hour and same day scheduling is accomodated if space is available. Also, appointments must be cancelled by 12 p.m. the day before the scheduled appointment. Cancellation after time will result in a $2 late cancel fee. Failure to pay the late cancel fee may result in suspension of service. 
  • Appointments are accepted between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Monday - Friday. Appointments may be scheduled 90 days in advance and service hours are 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.  24 hour voice mail is available for non-business hours.
  • To plan a local trip, contact Union County Transportation at 704-283-3713 and provide name and address of destination, the appointment time and date, and a telephone number of the destination.
  • To schedule an "out of county trip," call 704-283-3598 before making the appointment to get a list of predetermined dates transportation can be provided to destinations outside the county. Once dates have been received and the appointment scheduled, call the same phone number to provide name and address of destination, the appointment time and date, and the telephone number of the destination.
  • Passengers will adhere to all rules of safety and behavior of the transportation system provided to them at time of registration.
  • Vans will wait only three minutes beyond a scheduled pick-up time.
  • Passengers should be ready one hour before scheduled appointment, unless otherwise notified.
  • Passengers should notify office of changes in address or telephone numbers.
  • Changes in mobility status should be reported when making appointments.
