The Parks and Recreation Department provides recreational opportunities to the citizens of Union County and neighboring counties. These services assist in providing a healthy community, leisure activities for all age groups, and park venues for a variety of special civic-organized events. The Department seeks to provide, “Something Fun for Everyone!”
Currently, the Union County Parks and Recreation Department owns and operates three parks including Cane Creek Park in Waxhaw, Fred Kirby Park in Lake Park, and Jesse Helms Park in Monroe. These parks offer a wide variety of passive and athletic activities and services to the public.
The mission of the Department is to meet the need for quality recreational activities for all citizens by providing:
- Safe, family-friendly, and well-maintained parks,
- Hands-on outdoor activities.
- Active play opportunities for children and adults,
- Quality athletic fields,
- Conservation and environmental education
- And other special programming events, as appropriate.
Something Fun For Everyone!
Cane Creek Park’s Camping Area is sure to have the campsite and amenities to fit your individual or group need. In the Family Camping Area you can relax at one of 108 campsites overlooking Cane Creek Lake. Each campsite can accommodate a maximum of six people. Some campsites are available with water and electricity, while others also have sewer. Each site comes with a fireplace/grill combo and picnic table. Bathhouses are available close by with warm showers. There is also a camp store nearby stocked with concession items, firewood, ice, picnic, and fishing supplies for your convenience. Other amenities of the Family Camping Area include playgrounds, an arcade, miniature golf course, beach,( Open weekends Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day weekend when Park Life Guards are available) play field and basketball court, boat ramp, boat dock, and dump station. In addition Cane Creek offers Wilderness camping. This area is restricted to tents only and offers no hookups. Campers must park in the designated parking area and walk in a short distance to a campsite. Wilderness campsites can accommodate a maximum of five people with two tents. A bathhouse is within walking distance. The park has nine wilderness sites and they are available by request or on a first-come first-serve basis.
For larger groups, Cane Creek Park offers a Group Camping Area. The park offers small group sites (20 people/4 tent max) and large group sites (30 people/6 tent max). Group sites do not have water or electricity on site. A bathhouse is located within walking distance.
Also located in the Group Camping Area are six (6) rustic cabins. Our cabins can accommodate up to six (6) people. The cabins come equipped with electricity, two (2) sets of bunk beds, (1) double bed, dorm size refrigerator, heating and cooling unit, outdoor fire place/grill, and picnic table outside. A bathhouse is located within walking distance. Campers must provide their own linens. Smoking and cooking are prohibited inside the cabin. Pets are prohibited inside or outside the cabins.
For campers who would like to stay longer Cane Creek Park offers Annual Camp sites. Annual sites have paved drives, with water and sewer available. Separate electric meters allow the lessee party to contact the local power company and have the account placed in his/her name. These sites are in high demand and may require that your name to be put on a waiting list. Please call the Park’s Operation Center at 704-843-3919 for more information.
Cane Creek Park is a family oriented, water based recreation facility encompassing 1,050 acres of land
surrounding a 350-acre lake. This makes for a naturally scenic environment for a variety of outdoor activities and peaceful relaxation year round. All recreation facilities at Cane Creek Park are centered around the lake, and when you think of water, thoughts turn quickly to fishing. The lake is home to some of the best largemouth bass fishing in the state as well as bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Appropriate North Carolina State Licenses are required. Licenses can be purchased in the Day Use Area at the Operations Center.
Cane Creek Park’s Day Use Area offers many activities sure to please any outdoor enthusiast. For a modest fee, visitors can enjoy the following activities year round: fishing, boating, hiking, picnic areas, canoe and rowboat rentals, ball fields, playgrounds, and mountain bike and horse trails .

During Cane Creek Park’s summer season (Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day weekend) activities such as swimming, pedal boats, and miniature golf will be open. Swimming has been scheduled Wednesday - Sunday from 11:00AM until 6:30PM. These days and hours may vary throughout the season as lifeguard availability changes. Please call 704-843-3919 for days and hours of operation and activities available. Information will be available daily between 8:30AM and 4:30PM.
Miniature golf and pedal boats will remain open on weekends from the second weekend in September to the second weekend of October on a reduced schedule.
For larger events, the park offers a festival area, equipped with water and electricity, and not to mention great views of the lake. Jesse Helms Park Soccer Complex opened for public use July 25,2009 and is located at 1505 Summerlin Dairy
Road, Monroe, NC 28112. This complex has six (6) full-size “game” soccer fields. A limited amount of fields can be laid out for U-10 through Adult games upon request. Fields are primarily for official game play but there are a limited number of practice sessions which can be scheduled during the week. Fields can be reserved 48-hours in advance between April 1 and November 15 each year. These fields are not lighted for night play. Soccer fields cannot be used by individuals/teams without a confirmed reservation. Reservations may be requested Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm as indicated below. Fields can not be used for “unauthorized activities” (rugby, golf practice, etc.).
The Soccer Complex also has the following additional recreational facilities:
- Covered picnic shelter with picnic tables and double grill. Capacity: 75 people (maximum).
- Four individual concrete picnic sites with a grill and picnic table. (Capacity: Maximum of 12 people)
- One playground
- Paved walking track (approximately 4/10th mile)
- Bathroom facilities
- Six-section exercise station
The Soccer Complex is open for public use of the playground, walking trail, picnic shelter, and picnic sites from 8:00-5:00, Monday-Friday between April 1st and November 15th. (Rest/Recovery periods for the field’s turf are normally scheduled in June/July.) If soccer games are scheduled over the weekends, all facilities will be open during games times for public use. If no games are scheduled, the gates are locked and the park is closed for the day. Please call ahead to see if games are scheduled for the weekend (phone: 704-843-3919).

E-mail requests are preferred but if e-mail is not available, faxed or mailed-in requests are accepted. Reservations are accepted Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm and must be received a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Fees must be paid prior to using the facility.
Note: Reservations for “non-tournament play” for the Winter/Spring season are opened the preceding December. Reservations for the Summer/Fall season are opened the preceding June.

From the traffic signal at the junction of Hwy 74 and South Main Street in Wingate, NC, turn on South Main Street and travel 7/10 of a mile. Turn right on Summerlin Dairy Road and travel approximately 1.4 miles. The soccer complex will be located on the right.
Fred Kirby Park is located in the western part of Union County in the Lake Park Community. This park was developed as a small athletic complex for both baseball and soccer. The park has the following amenities:
- (2) Baseball Fields
- (1) Full-size Soccer Field
- (2) Small gazebos style shelters (20’ x 20’)
- (1) Small playground
- Paved walking trail (approximately 1/3 mile)
- Restroom facilities
Athletic fields can be reserved 48-hours in advance between mid-February and mid-November each year. (Rest/Recovery periods for the fields’ turf are normally scheduled in June/July.) The baseball fields are not lighted for night play. The soccer field is lighted for night play up to 9:30pm. Athletic fields cannot be used by individuals/teams without a confirmed reservation. Reservations may be requested Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm as indicated below.
The park gates are open when the athletic fields are in use by individuals/teams with approved reservations. Otherwise, the gates to the park are locked, indicating the park is closed.
