Union County Public Records Requests Procedures

 

Union County is committed to transparency and making public records available to members of the public in a timely manner. The following information will help you understand the process established to accommodate the public's right to access, while setting forth defined and consistent steps for requesting these records. 

North Carolina Public Records law is found in G.S. Chapter 132. The statute lists items that are not to be disclosed to the public and outlines the method in which public records requests should be submitted. The content of your request needs to be well detailed and easily identifiable. It is our goal to respond to all public records requests within five business days. More complex requests may take longer, but will be addressed promptly.

The following is a list of common public records requests:

1.    Divorce Records/Traffic Violation Records/Criminal and Civil Disputes

You can obtain information regarding a divorce, traffic violation or other court-related records, such as criminal and civil disputes, by contacting the Union County Clerk of Superior Court, using the information below.

Marriage, Birth or Death Certificates

To obtain a marriage, birth or death certificate, submit a form online or visit the Register of Deeds office:

4.    Criminal Background Checks

 

A name-based criminal record check may be obtained by contacting the Union County Clerk of Superior Court at 704-698-3100 or email.

5.    Building Plans and Permits

 Here's how to request a public record from Union County

Step 1: Submit a request online or complete the Public Records Request form and submit it one of the following ways:
  • Return it by email to: publicrecords@unioncountync.gov

  • Return it by mail to: Union County Communications Officer - 500 N. Main Street, Monroe, N.C. 28112

  •  Return it by FAX to: 704-282-0121

Step 2: Union County staff will notify the requestor of receipt and forward the request to the appropriate Service Area or Division.Step 3: Union County staff will notify the requestor when the records are available.

The purpose of this schedule is to create a county-wide standard fee for copying or printing of public records requests throughout Union County Government.
