Due to the overwhelming need for food for families in Union County the wait for commodity food has increased dramatically. Families have had to stand in line for hours to receive food each quarter; many times lines began to form as early as 9 pm the night before a distribution. Volunteers have worked extremely hard to help meet the demands of the citizens in our communities and distributed food to more than 46,000 families during the past ten years.
In order to continue feeding the families in the most effective manner, the food that we would have normally received will be going to Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte. From there, the food that has been allotted to Union County will be distributed to food pantries that have agreed to assist with distributing the food. The date that this food will begin moving into the pantries has not been determined. As soon as that date is announced, we will let you know.
Each pantry will have hours in which families can pick up their food once per month at the pantry closest to their home.
Pantries that have agreed to assist in distributing the USDA food are:
Loaves and Fishes, 202 Stewart Street, Monroe
Friday and Saturday, 10 am until 1 pm
Open Arms, Wingate
