The Historic Union County Courthouse, built in 1886, is a Late Victorian, two story masonry structure surmounted by a large cupola. The physical location is 300 N. Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina 28112. The courthouse was designed by Thomas Holt, the younger brother of famed North Carolina architect Jacob Holt. The wings of the facility were constructed in 1926. The facility is currently serving as office space for the Union County Historical Society and the Carolinas Genealogical Society. The requested Historic Structure Report is an initial step towards the adaptive reuse of the Historic Union County Courthouse.
