About the Low Income Energy Assistance Program

The North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) provides a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills. The time frame to apply for this benefit is December 1st through March 31st of each year.

The LIEAP program has changed effective December 2012. Households must apply in order to receive assistance. LIEAP is paid directly to an energy provider and checks are not issued to individual households. The amount of assistance will range from $200.00 to $400.00 depending on household size and income. Union County will begin taking applications effective December of each year. Applications will ONLY be processed for the following households during the month of December. A household must have at least one person aged 60 or older and/or a household must contain at least one person who is disabled and receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult services (DAAS). Applications for other types of households will be taken from January 1st through March 31st or until all funds are exhausted.
