What taxes do we collect?

Union County’s strives to list, appraise, assess and collect all real and personal property for ad valorem tax purposes in compliance with NC General Statutes and accomplish these activities while providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers. These include:

  • Real Estate and Personal Property Tax Bills
  • Delinquent Motor Vehicle Tax Bills
  • Gross Receipts Taxes
  • Current and Delinquent Water and Sewer Bills
  • Landfill Fees
  • Utility Payments

In addition to the county tax bills we also collect property tax bills for the following municipalities: Fairview, Hemby Bridge, Marshville, Mineral Springs, Stallins, Wesley Chapel, and Wingate.

When are taxes due?

Property Taxes – For everything except motor vehicles, taxes are due September 1st and must be paid by January 5th to avoid interest charges. If mailed, payments must be postmarked by the US Postal Service on or before January 5th to avoid interest charges. If January 5th falls on the weekend taxes are due the following Monday. Interest charges are 2% if paid January 6th through 31st and an additional ¾% each month thereafter.


Motor Vehicles - Property taxes on registered motor vehicles are now paid at the time of registration or renewal of your existing license plate.

Where can I pay my taxes?

To make the process of paying taxes as easy for residents as possible, Union County provides multiple ways to be able to do so.

  • You can use the online payment option.
  • Payments can be mailed to the address on the bill or to Union County Tax Collector, PO Box 38, Monroe, NC 28111-0038. Please include the payment stub with your payment to avoid delays.
  • Payment can be made in person at the customer service counter or at the drive up payment drop box on Crowell St. behind the Old Post Office Building, which is located in front of the Union County Judicial Center.

DATA AVAILABILITY

REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES

Information related to all paid and unpaid real estate and personal property tax bills for the current tax year, as well as the previous nine (9) years, is available on this site. If you need official statements as to taxes paid or unpaid please contact our office at taxhelp@unioncountync.gov. Copies of tax bills for 2015 and forward are available in our online tax payment search.

REGISTERED MOTOR VEHICLES

Property taxes on registered motor vehicles are now paid to the NCDMV when you register your vehicle. Information related to those taxes and how much you paid can be found on your registration renewal notice or on the receipt attached to your registration card. If you do not have this documentation please follow the link below to access your DMV payment history. About the Revenue Division

The duty of the Revenue Division is to administer the laws of the State of North Carolina governing the collection of property taxes in a fair and equitable manner. Our goal is to carry out our responsibilities in the most efficient and effective way possible in accordance with Chapter 105 of the North Carolina General Statutes. This division is responsible for the collection of all ad valorem related taxes and fees in addition to all county utility charges, landfill fees, and miscellaneous utility fees. Additionally, this division is responsible for the assessment and valuation of all registered motor vehicles owned by residents of Union County.
