May 19, 2015 Monroe, NC – The 2015 FIFA Women‟s Soccer World Cup will begin on June 6 in Canada and Team USA is among the favorites to win this year‟s championship. To help you understand the tournament and enjoy what you see on television, the Monroe Public Library is sponsoring a program entitled “Understanding and Enjoying the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.” This event will take place on Tuesday, May 26 at 5 p.m. in the Griffin Room of the Monroe Library.
Through quizzes, trivia, a description of the tournament, and biographical sketches of the world‟s best players, you will learn interesting facts about the World Cup which will add to your enjoyment of the games and enable you to astound your friends and amaze your children. Members of the Charlotte Lady Eagles professional soccer team will be on hand to share their experiences playing soccer and their insights on the World Cup as players.
Reading lists on the game of soccer and the nations participating in the World Cup will be available for children and will count towards the Library‟s summer reading program for kids.
Robert Dow had this to say regarding his motivation in hosting the program. “I watched how Americans rallied around the US team at last year‟s Men‟s World Cup even though they didn't know much about soccer,” Dow said. “I wanted to help people better understand the game and the World Cup itself. As a former collegiate player, local youth coach, and high school and club referee, I love the „beautiful game‟ and enjoy teaching others about it.”
This program is free for all ages and registration is not required.
