The Centralina Council of Governments is seeking volunteers interested in joining the nursing home Community Advisory Committee (CAC). Members are volunteer advocates who are trained by the Ombudsman Program and appointed by their County Commissioners. Members serve in their county of residence on either the Nursing Home CAC or the Adult Care Home CAC. Across North Carolina, there are more than 1,300 volunteers who advocate for quality care for facility residents.
In Union County, there are more than 700 residents in the County’s seven nursing homes. Currently, the Union County Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee does not have enough volunteers to visit these residents as required. Volunteers with this program meet a very special need by serving some of the most vulnerable citizens in our community.
The primary purpose of these committees is to promote the Bill of Rights in nursing homes and adult care homes across North Carolina. Volunteers accomplish this by visiting their assigned facilities, talking with residents about their experiences, and resolving problems when necessary.Volunteers are not searching for complaints, but if a complaint arises, they are trained to handle them.
To be eligible to serve on the committee, a volunteer must be a resident of Union County and must be able to devote 6-8 hours per month to conduct visits and attend required training meetings. The volunteer must also be free of any conflict of interest.
The committees also promote community involvement to ensure quality of life for older adults. Each fall, the committees host a county-wide celebration for the nursing home and assisted living residents to enjoy food, entertainment, dancing, and even some friendly competition. Volunteer committee members work hard to promote ongoing community involvement in this annual event.
